Charity launches new training programme to support adult sleep

The Sleep Charity has partnered with leading sleep science expert, Professor Jason Ellis, to launch a new training programme that will help health and care sector workers understand more about adult sleep and how to support those that are struggling.

40 per cent of the adult population suffers with sleep issues, which leads many to seek professional help. Poor sleep can have an impact on mood, behaviour, ability to concentrate, and affect overall productivity.

A study from the Charity[1], revealed that over half (57 per cent) of UK adults feel there is a lack of support for people with sleep issues and almost half (48 per cent) think companies should offer support for staff who have trouble sleeping.

The five-part course covers a wide range of topics including sleep physiology, insomnia, menopause and mental health.

The Sleep Charity’s deputy CEO, Lisa Artis, said: “We are delighted to be working with Professor Jason Ellis on these courses, truly focussing on adult sleep and the affects that ageing, menopause and mental health issues can have on sleep and overall wellbeing.

“We’ve had some incredible feedback from our Workplace Sleep Ambassador training courses and wanted to expand our training options specifically for those working and supporting adults to further empower the whole nation to sleep better.”

Jason Ellis, a professor of sleep science at Northumbria University and director of the Northumbria Sleep Research Laboratory, is a qualified somnologist from the European Sleep Research Society and a practicing health psychologist under the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

He added: “The Sleep Charity do amazing work and it has been fantastic to work with them to create these courses and I hope that anyone with an interest in sleep finds the series useful.

“Whether you are new to a health or care role and want to learn more about sleep, or are keen to expand your knowledge in this area, then these courses will provide the tools you need to equip others to sleep better and combat the leading obstructions to achieving good quality sleep.”
