Leeds has emerged as one of the UK’s strongest centres for artificial intelligence growth, with local AI firms expanding their workforce by 22 per cent per year, on average. The figure outpaces London’s 7.2 per cent increase and the national average of 4.8 per cent, according to new data from Leeds-based analytics company, The Data City.
The surge highlights how AI is a driver of growth in the city, adding to Leeds’ reputation as a diverse and innovative economy. Women have founded one in five new businesses in Leeds, while more than 27 per cent of company directorships are held by women.
Beyond the booming AI sector, Leeds is making headway in other high-growth fields. By company numbers, the agency market, digital creative industries, and life sciences are showing strength, while job postings indicate rapid expansion in sports and physical activities, software development, net zero, and data infrastructure.
Alex Craven, co-founder of The Data City, said: “These figures show how Leeds has become one of the most exciting centres for AI in the country. The city is not only creating jobs at a faster rate than London, it is also developing the kind of diverse and resilient ecosystem needed to compete internationally.”
The findings come ahead of this year’s Leeds Digital Festival, which runs from 22 September to 3 October and celebrates its tenth anniversary. With more than 220 sessions, the festival has become a showcase for innovation and collaboration, attracting entrepreneurs, universities, and investors.
Festival director Stuart Clarke MBE, said: “The rise in AI jobs proves how Leeds is setting the pace nationally. The city is proud of its position as one of the UK’s fastest-growing centres for AI. Strong universities, a thriving start-up culture and ambitious established companies are combining to create huge opportunities. This year’s digital festival will again put that energy on display for a global audience.”
The 2025 festival is supported by premier sponsors CGI, Skipton Group and PEXA, executive sponsors Accenture, Genio, Leeds City Council and Lloyds Banking Group, and launch sponsor Nexus University of Leeds.
