Sainsbury’s plans to cut over 3,000 jobs. The supermarket will close 61 in-store cafes. This move is part of a plan to save £1 billion in three years. The closures are still under consultation.
Most Sainsbury’s customers don’t use the cafes regularly. Cafes and food halls by specialist partners are becoming more popular.
Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s chief executive, said the supermarket faces tough cost challenges. He explained: “As we move into the next stages of our strategy, we are in a challenging cost environment. We have to make hard choices on where to invest and where to cut back to improve efficiency.”
Roberts also mentioned supporting employees affected by this decision.
Cafes that might close include locations in:
– Fosse Park, Leicestershire
– Pontypridd, South Wales
– Rustington, West Sussex
– Scarborough, North Yorkshire
– Penzance, Cornwall
– Denton, Greater Manchester
– And many more across the UK.
